What an electric fireplace costs to run
27.5 cents an hour on full heat. Under two cents with the heater off. Here is the working, the source, and why the numbers you have been reading elsewhere are roughly half of what you will actually pay.

The formula, so you can check us
cost per hour = (rated watts ÷ 1,000) × your rate in dollars per kWh
For a 1,500 W unit at 18.34 cents: 1,500 ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 kWh per hour; 1.5 × $0.1834 = $0.2751. That is the whole calculation. Every cost figure on this site comes from that one line of arithmetic, implemented once in the code so no page can disagree with another.
Where the rate comes from, and why it matters
18.34 cents per kWh is the US residential average from the EIA's Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3, for June 2026, released 2026-08-26. It is a national average and your own rate is on your own bill — state rates vary widely around it, and that variation matters more to your answer than anything about the fireplace.
Your own rate changes the answer more than the fireplace does
Residential electricity rates across US states span a range wide enough that the same fireplace can differ by a factor of two or more between one household and another. That is a bigger swing than any difference between products, which is why we built the calculator rather than publishing a single number and leaving it there.

At 1,500 W this unit produces about 5,118 BTU/hr and draws 12.5 A on a 120 V circuit. The formula is (watts ÷ 1000) × rate, applied for the hours you entered — the same function that renders every cost figure elsewhere on this site. The flame-only number, which nobody publishes
Flame and heater are independent controls on essentially every electric fireplace made. Switch the heater off and the draw collapses to the LED assembly and its controller. We use a deliberately conservative 100 W for that figure across the whole site — many units draw considerably less — which at 18.34 cents per kWh works out to under two cents an hour.
For a lot of buyers that single figure reframes the purchase entirely. If what you want is a fire to look at on a winter evening, running one every night from October to March costs a few dollars. The expensive part of owning an electric fireplace is the heating, and the heating is optional.
Does it save money as zone heating?
Only if you turn the central thermostat down. That is the entire condition, and it is the part most often left out.
- Added to your existing heating, an electric fireplace is a pure addition to the bill — about 27.5 cents for every hour it runs on high.
- Substituted for whole-house heating, it can cost less, if the room you are heating is small and the rest of the house genuinely gets cooler.
- Against a gas furnace, electricity at 18.34 cents per kWh is generally an expensive way to make heat, so the zone case is weaker.
- Against electric resistance heating, it is the same energy in a nicer-looking box — no saving, no loss.
- Against a heat pump, an electric fireplace is usually the more expensive source per unit of heat, because a heat pump moves heat rather than making it.
What about standby draw?
Negligible, and we are not going to invent a number for it. Units with remotes and displays draw a small standby load, but it is a rounding error next to a 1,500 W heater and it is not worth planning around. If you want it at zero, unplug it in the summer.

How much does an electric fireplace cost per hour?
About 27.5 cents at 1,500 W and the June 2026 US average of 18.34 cents per kWh. On the 750 W low setting, about 13.8 cents. Running the flame effect without the heater, under two cents.
How much does an electric fireplace cost per month?
At four hours a night on full heat, about $33 a month. On low, about $16.50. Flame only, about $2.20. All at 18.34 cents per kWh — your own rate will move these.
Are electric fireplaces expensive to run?
On full heat they cost roughly the same as any 1,500 W space heater, which is not cheap — about $99 over a 90-day winter at four hours a night. Run as a flame effect without heat, they are close to free.
Do electric fireplaces use a lot of electricity?
A 1,500 W unit draws about as much as a hair dryer, and about 12.5 amps — most of a 15-amp circuit on its own. That is why manufacturers commonly specify a dedicated circuit for them.
Is it cheaper to run an electric fireplace or central heating?
It depends entirely on what your central heating burns. Against a gas furnace, electricity at 18.34 cents per kWh is usually more expensive per unit of heat, so the fireplace only saves money if it lets you heat far less space. Against electric resistance heating it is the same energy in a different box.
How much does it cost to run just the flame?
Under two cents an hour, or about seven cents for a four-hour evening, using a conservative 100 W estimate for the LED assembly. Many units draw considerably less than that.
