Enter the room and the unit's rated wattage. The rule of thumb is 20 BTU per square foot for supplemental heat in a reasonably insulated US home — it is a rule of thumb, and drafty rooms, high ceilings and single glazing all push the real number up.

The arithmetic behind it

Watts × 3.412 = BTU per hour. A room needs roughly 20 BTU per square foot for supplemental heating in a reasonably insulated US home. A 1,500 W fireplace produces about 5,118 BTU/hr, which covers about 256 square feet.

The watt-to-BTU conversion is exact — resistive heating converts essentially all electrical input into heat, so there is nothing to discount. The 20 BTU per square foot figure is a rule of thumb, and the calculator says so rather than presenting it as precision it does not have.

When the rule of thumb is wrong

  • Ceilings above 8 feet. You heat volume, not area. A 10-foot ceiling is 25% more air to warm.
  • Large windows or single glazing. Glass loses heat quickly, and a wall of it changes the answer materially.
  • A cold climate. The rule assumes a moderate winter, not a northern one.
  • Poor insulation, drafts, or an open flue. A room that loses heat faster than 5,118 BTU/hr supplies it will not get warm, whatever you put in it.
  • Open-plan. There is no such thing as heating one end of a room with no other end.

Why the answer is the same for every product

Because 1,500 W is the ceiling for the entire category — 120 volts at 12.5 amps, which is the practical continuous limit for a standard 15-amp household circuit. Every plug-in electric fireplace sold in the US hits it, so this calculator's answer does not change when you change brands. Only 240 V hardwired equipment goes beyond, and that is a different category entirely.

Questions people actually ask

How many square feet will an electric fireplace heat?

About 256 square feet as the sole heat source, from the 5,118 BTU per hour a 1,500 W unit produces at 20 BTU per square foot. Above that it is supplemental heat.

How many BTU do I need for a 400 square foot room?

About 8,000 BTU per hour on the rule of thumb — well beyond the 5,118 any plug-in electric fireplace can supply. In a room that size an electric fireplace is supplemental heat, not a heat source.

Why do manufacturers claim 400 or 1,000 square feet?

Those are supplemental-heat ratings: what the appliance can contribute to a space also heated by something else. They are not claims that the unit will bring that area up to temperature by itself.

Does room shape matter?

Somewhat. A long narrow room heats less evenly than a square one of the same area, and an open doorway effectively adds the adjoining space. The calculator uses floor area, which is the standard approach and is good enough to decide with.
