Editorial policy

A figure appears on this site only if it is read from a document we link, or computed from a formula we show. There is no third category. If we cannot show where a number came from, it does not go on the page — we write that the figure is not published rather than estimating one.

In practice that means every product block links the manufacturer or retailer page its specifications came from, every running-cost figure carries the electricity rate and its dated EIA source, and every heat figure shows the watts-to-BTU conversion it came from. You can check any of it.

We have not tested these fireplaces. We do not own them, we have no lab, and we have not measured anything with an instrument. We do not claim certifications, trade experience or tenure, and the byline is framed as an enthusiast for exactly that reason. What we claim is that we compiled the published data and did the arithmetic — which is verifiable, and sufficient.

• We do not accept payment for placement or ranking. No exceptions, no sponsored slots, no paid inclusion.
• We have never accepted a free product. Related to the above: we do not own these units, so there is nothing to be given.
• Retailers and manufacturers do not see rankings before publication. No previews, no right of reply on a ranking.
• Commission rates do not affect ordering. Where a unit is not stocked on a program we have joined, we link it anyway and say we earn nothing.
• Every roundup names a unit to skip. It is the cheapest available proof of independence and we do it every time.

We correct errors publicly and note the date. Email info@emberandinsert.com with what is wrong and, if you have it, where the correct figure comes from. Because everything here is computed from shown formulas or read from linked documents, a correction is usually a matter of fact rather than opinion, which makes this easier than it is on most sites.

We do not quietly change a number and move on. If a figure was wrong on a page people read, the page says so.

Manufacturer documentation and major-retailer listings for specifications; the EIA for the electricity rate; published standards bodies where safety or code is involved. We link to a competitor when they have a better answer than ours — Consumer Reports runs a genuine testing lab with a sensor-rigged mannequin, and where their result is the best available we will say so and point you there, membership wall and all.

What we never cite: our own memory, an uncited aggregator, or another affiliate site's unsourced number.

We publish Article, FAQ, ItemList, Breadcrumb and Organization markup. We do not publish Review, review rating or aggregate rating markup of our own, because we have not reviewed these units hands-on and marking up an editorial score as a review rating would assert otherwise to a machine while this page says the opposite to a human.

We also do not publish Offer markup with a price, because prices come only from a live data layer and inventing one to satisfy a schema validator is the same fabrication as inventing one for a reader.

We are not electricians. Where an answer depends on electrical code — panel capacity, dedicated circuits, permits, receptacles inside wall cavities — we say so and point you at a licensed professional in your jurisdiction. That boundary appears at the point in each page where the question actually arises, not as a disclaimer at the bottom.

We also do not give structural advice. Cutting a load-bearing stud without a header is a question for a carpenter, and we say that rather than talking someone through it.

The photography on this site is licensed stock, used for atmosphere and context. It is never presented as a photograph of a specific product, of our premises, or of work we have done — because none of those exist. Product images, when the live data layer provides them, come from the retailer's own catalog and nowhere else.
