How to size a mantel package
Four measurements and one ratio. Get these right and the room reads as designed; get them wrong and it reads as furniture that arrived by accident.

The rule, stated once
A media console should be about two-thirds the width of the wall it sits on, and wider than the television on top of it. Those two constraints between them decide almost every purchase in this category. Everything else is finish.
The four measurements to take first
- Wall width, from corner to corner or between whatever actually bounds the space. Multiply by 0.66 for your target console width.
- Television width, measured, not calculated — and the distance between its feet, which is frequently the real constraint.
- Floor depth available. A 15.75-inch console plus a walkway is over three feet of room gone.
- Seating distance and eye height. Sit where you will sit. A television centered too high above a console is the most common outcome of not doing this.

The height mistake
Most fireplace consoles are 23 to 25 inches tall. A 75-inch television on top of one puts the center of the screen at roughly 46 to 48 inches — which is close to correct for a sofa, where seated eye height is usually 40 to 45 inches.
This is one of the few places where the standard console dimension is genuinely well-chosen. Where it goes wrong is when people wall-mount a television above a console as well, which pushes the screen to 60 inches or higher and gives everyone a stiff neck. If you are mounting, mount low.

A 60-inch console and an 80-inch console draw the same 1,500 W and cost the same 27.5 cents an hour. Size is a proportion decision, not a heat decision — a point worth holding on to when a wider unit is being sold on a larger coverage figure.

Run the two-thirds rule on it: 70 inches wants a wall of at least about 105 inches, or roughly 8 feet 9. On a 12-foot wall it sits comfortably; on a 9-foot wall it is the wall.
The 15.75-inch depth is worth noting in a narrow room — that is over a foot of floor gone before you place anything in front of it.

24 by 23.4 by 13.1 inches. When a 70-inch console would eat the room, this is what fits instead.
The sizing problem nobody addresses is what to do when the room is genuinely small. Every console in this category is 60 to 70 inches wide, which in a 10-foot room is most of a wall.
At 24 inches wide and 13.1 deep this takes about a third of the footprint, tucks into a corner, and publishes a real heat figure — 5,200 BTU per hour at 120 V and 12.5 A.
You give up the television surface and the storage. In a small room you were probably wall-mounting the television anyway.
What it does not do: It is a freestanding stove, not an insert. It will not fill a masonry opening and it needs floor space plus clearance in front of the glass door.

Questions people actually ask
How wide should a TV console be?
About two-thirds the width of the wall, and always wider than the television. For a 10-foot wall that is roughly 79 inches on the ratio, which in practice means the 70-inch console that dominates this category.
How high should a fireplace console be?
Most are 23 to 25 inches, which puts a television's center at roughly seated eye height. That is why the dimension is so consistent across brands — it is genuinely the right answer for a sofa.
What if my room is too small for a 70-inch console?
Wall-mount the television and use a linear wall unit below it, or use a freestanding stove in a corner. Both put a fire in a small room without a piece of furniture consuming most of a wall.
Does console size affect heat output?
No. Every plug-in electric fireplace caps at 1,500 W and about 5,118 BTU per hour regardless of the furniture around it. A wider console gives you a wider flame and the same warmth.
