Water vapor fireplaces
The only electric flame that occupies real space rather than pretending to. It is also cool to the touch, produces no heat whatsoever, and needs refilling — which makes it either exactly right or completely wrong for you.

How the flame is actually made
Ultrasonic transducers vibrate at high frequency in a reservoir of ordinary tap water, breaking the surface into an extremely fine cool mist. That mist rises through the firebox and LEDs light it from below. What you see is illuminated water vapor moving through real three-dimensional space — which is why it behaves like smoke and fire rather than like a picture of them.
Every other electric fireplace mechanism produces a lit surface: LEDs on a reflector, LEDs behind a diffuser, or a video of fire on a screen. All three are two-dimensional effects that your eye can catch out from the wrong angle. Mist is the only one where the flame has actual volume, and that is a categorical difference rather than an incremental one.

The "does it repeat" row is the one people underestimate. Every LED assembly runs a program and every LCD unit plays a finite video, and once you have noticed the loop point you cannot un-notice it. Mist never produces the same shape twice because it is a fluid, not a recording.

The two things it cannot do
1. It produces no heat
This is not a limitation to work around, it is what the product is. Dimplex is explicit that the Opti-Myst flame effect produces no heat and that the flame is cool enough to put your hand through. Some models offer an independent heater as a separate option, but that heater is a different component bolted into the same cabinet — the mist itself is doing nothing thermal.
So if you arrived here from a heating question, this is the wrong page. The 1,500 W plug-in units on best electric fireplaces for heat are what you want, and none of them looks as good as this.
2. It needs refilling
A water-vapor fireplace is a small appliance you maintain, not a thing you switch on and forget about for a season. It uses ordinary tap water from a reservoir you fill by hand. How often depends on usage and the model, and rather than guess at a figure we have not verified, we will say plainly: assume it is a regular household task and check the specific model's guidance before buying.
What it draws, and an ambiguity worth naming
Dimplex publishes 120 V and 1,250 W for the Opti-Myst Revive 25. That figure sits oddly next to the statement that the flame effect produces no heat, and it is worth being precise about rather than glossing over: a 1,250 W load has to go somewhere, and in a resistive appliance that somewhere is normally heat.
The most likely reading is that the published rating covers the unit's maximum draw including an optional heater, rather than the mist and LEDs alone — ultrasonic transducers and LEDs are low-draw components and could not plausibly account for 1,250 W. But Dimplex does not break the figure down on the product page, so we are not going to state a mist-only wattage we cannot source. If running cost matters to you, ask the retailer for the draw of the flame effect on its own before you buy.
Living with one
This is the part the product photography never covers, and it is the difference between loving one of these and resenting it. A water-vapor fireplace is a small appliance with a consumable, which puts it closer to a humidifier or a coffee machine than to the plug-in-and-forget units everywhere else on this site.
- It needs filling by hand with ordinary tap water, on a schedule set by how much you run it. Check the specific model's guidance — we have not verified a figure and will not invent one.
- Hard water leaves deposits on ultrasonic transducers in every appliance that uses them. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance; this is a maintenance task, not an optional extra.
- It adds moisture to the room, because that is literally what it does. In a small, already-humid room that is worth thinking about; in a dry house in winter some people count it as a benefit.
- It is the one unit here with a consumable failure mode. An LED fireplace that is neglected still works. This one stops producing a flame when the reservoir is empty.
Where it makes most sense
- Bright, open-plan rooms used in daylight. The hardest case in the category, and the one where LED genuinely cannot compete at any price.
- Rooms people move through, where the fireplace is seen from many angles rather than from one sofa.
- Where there are small children and a heated glass front at toddler height is a concern. The mist flame is cool to the touch.
- Where heating is already solved and the fireplace is purely an object. This is the ideal case.
- Not where you need supplemental warmth, and not where nobody will remember to refill it.

How does a water vapor fireplace work?

Is a water vapor fireplace worth the money?
If flame realism is the priority and heat is not, yes — it is the only mechanism producing a flame with real volume, and it works in the daylight and off-axis conditions that defeat every LED unit. If you want warmth as well, no.
