Every plug-in electric fireplace in the United States is capped at 1,500 watts, which is about 5,118 BTU per hour, because that is what a standard 120 V circuit will safely supply continuously. And flame and heater are separate switches, so the flame alone costs under two cents an hour to run. Most of what follows is a consequence of one of those two.

Do electric fireplaces actually heat a room?

Yes, up to about 256 square feet. A 1,500 W unit produces roughly 5,118 BTU per hour, and the common rule of thumb is 20 BTU per square foot. Above that size it is supplemental heat — noticeably warmer where you sit, not a heated room. Full working on do they actually heat a room.

How much does an electric fireplace cost to run?

About 27.5 cents an hour on full heat, at the June 2026 US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh. That is roughly $99 across a 90-day winter at four hours a night. With the heater off and just the flame running, under two cents an hour. Put your own rate in the calculator.

Why are all electric fireplaces 1,500 watts?

Because a standard US household circuit is 120 volts and 15 amps, continuous loads are conventionally limited to about 12 amps, and 12.5 amps at 120 volts is 1,500 watts. Every plug-in unit hits the same wall. Exceeding it needs 240 V hardwired equipment, which is a different category entirely.

Does a more expensive electric fireplace give more heat?

No. A $180 log set and an $1,800 recessed linear unit both produce about 5,118 BTU per hour, because they are both capped at 1,500 W. Price buys flame quality, housing, glass and warranty — never warmth.

Are electric fireplaces safe?

Yes, and by a wide margin compared with any fuel-burning fireplace. There is no combustion, so no carbon monoxide, no smoke, no sparks and no flue. The genuine considerations are electrical — circuit load, cord routing and clearance. Detail on are electric fireplaces safe.

Can an electric fireplace cause carbon monoxide?

No. Carbon monoxide is a product of combustion and nothing in an electric fireplace burns. This is why they can be fitted in bedrooms and basements with no venting and no detector requirement.

Do electric fireplaces need a chimney or venting?

No. Nothing is exhausted, so there is nothing to vent. If you have an existing chimney it can stay capped and unused — and closing the damper is worth doing, because an open flue draws heated room air out all winter.

Does an electric fireplace need a dedicated circuit?

Many manufacturers specify one. At 1,500 W a unit draws about 12.5 amps, which is roughly 83% of a 15-amp circuit before anything else is plugged in. Whether your existing wiring can carry it is a question for a licensed electrician — we are not electricians and do not give code advice.

Can I plug an electric fireplace into an extension cord?

No. Manufacturers prohibit it and the reason is sound: a continuous 12.5 amp load through a cord or power strip not rated for it is a genuine fire risk. Plug it directly into a wall receptacle.

Do electric fireplaces look real?

In evening light, viewed head-on, modern layered-LED units are convincing enough that most visitors do not comment. In bright daylight or from a sharp angle, most are not. Which of those describes your room matters more than the price. See do they look cheap.

Which flame technology looks the most realistic?

Ultrasonic water vapor — Dimplex's Opti-Myst mechanism — because the flame is illuminated mist occupying real three-dimensional space rather than a lit surface. It costs several times more than LED, needs refilling, and on most models the flame effect produces no heat at all.

Can you run the flame without the heat?

Yes, on essentially every unit made — they are independent controls, and it is how most owners use them for most of the year. It also costs a small fraction of running the heater: under two cents an hour against 27.5.

Can you put an electric insert in an existing fireplace?

Yes, and it is the most common use for one. A decommissioned masonry firebox needs no venting and no gas line. The two things to check are the opening dimensions at the BACK as well as the front, and whether there is a receptacle within reach.

How deep does a wall need to be for a recessed unit?

About 3.5 inches, which is what a standard 2x4 stud wall provides. Units published under about 4 inches deep sit nearly flush in that. Anything deeper needs furring strips, a 2x6 wall, or a built-out chase.

What size TV stand do I need for a 75-inch TV?

70 inches or wider. A 75-inch set is about 66 inches across, so a 70-inch console carries it with clearance either side. Check the distance between the television's feet too — that is often the real constraint.

Are electric fireplace TV stands safe with a TV on top?

Generally yes. There is no combustion, no smoke and no soot, and these consoles vent forward rather than up through the top surface. The bigger risk in the room is furniture tip-over — fit the anti-tip strap that came in the box.

Do electric fireplaces save money on heating?

Only if you turn the central thermostat down and heat one occupied room instead of the whole house. Added to your existing heating, an electric fireplace increases the bill by about 27.5 cents for every hour it runs on high.

Are electric fireplace inserts worth it?

Worth it if you have a dead firebox you want to look alive, want zero venting and zero maintenance, and treat the heat as a bonus. Not worth it as a strategy for reducing a whole-house heating bill. The conditional answer is on are they worth it.

Why does my electric fireplace not seem to heat?

Check the setting first — many units default to the 750 W low setting, which is half the heat. Then check the room size against 256 square feet, then check nothing is blocking the heat outlet. Those three explain nearly every case.
