How we pick
We have not tested these fireplaces. This page is exactly what we did instead, and how to check any of it.

What we do
- Compile published specifications from manufacturer manuals, brand product pages and major-retailer listings — and cite the document each figure came from, on the page where it appears.
- Compute running cost from rated wattage at a dated, sourced electricity rate. The formula is on the page: (watts ÷ 1,000) × rate.
- Compute the heat ceiling from rated watts (watts × 3.412 = BTU per hour) and compare it honestly against room size rather than repeating a manufacturer's coverage claim.
- Classify flame technology by how it physically works — LED reflector, layered LED, LCD screen, or ultrasonic water vapor — and state the conditions in which each one fails.
- Read owner reports at volume, and say so when they contradict the spec sheet. Labeled as owner experience, never as ours.
- Name at least one unit to skip in every roundup, with the reason. A roundup where everything is great is an advertisement.
What we do not do
We have not tested these fireplaces. We do not own them, we have no lab, and we have not put a decibel meter or a smart plug on any of them. Everyone in this category says they tested twelve units. We have not tested any, and we say so.
Here is what we did instead: compiled the published specs, computed the running cost at the real 2026 electricity rate, worked out the heat ceiling from the physics, and read the owner reviews that contradict the marketing. Every number on this site can be checked, because we show where it came from and how it was calculated.
That is a weaker claim than the ones our competitors make, and it has one significant advantage over them: it is true. A reader can verify any figure on this site in about five minutes, which is not something you can say about "three months of testing" published by a technology blog whose other categories are mini-splits and chimney products.
Why the honesty is not a handicap here
This is an unusual category. The pages currently ranking for electric fireplace terms include a cocktails-and-restaurants site claiming fifteen years of testing home heating solutions, a cell-biology site headlined "12 Models Tested", and a technology blog claiming three months of testing with decibel readings and smart-plug electricity metering. None of them publishes a methodology. None has a credentialed author. None has a homepage that is about fireplaces.
Meanwhile the one genuinely credentialed competitor — Consumer Reports, which runs a real lab with a sensor-rigged mannequin — is behind a membership wall. So the accessible field is held by testing claims that are not true, and the gap is not "be more expert than Consumer Reports". It is "be the only accessible site whose claims are actually accurate".

Where our numbers come from
- Electricity rate: the EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3 — 18.34 cents per kWh, US residential average, June 2026, released 2026-08-26. Re-checked quarterly; if it moves, every page quoting it is updated and the review date advances.
- Product specifications: manufacturer manuals, brand product pages, and major-retailer listings. Every product block on this site links the documents its specs came from.
- Flame technology: manufacturer technical documentation describing how the effect is produced.
- What we never cite: our own memory, an uncited aggregator, or another affiliate site's unsourced number.
On prices specifically
Prices come only from a live retailer data layer, never from copy and never from memory. When there is no live price for a unit, the button says "Check price" rather than showing a number — and at the time of writing that is every unit on the site, because the live pricing feed is not yet provisioned for this brand. A stale price is worse than no price, because it looks like information.
The same rule governs the structured data: we do not publish Product or Offer markup with an invented price, and we publish no Review or rating markup of our own at all — because we have not reviewed these units hands-on and marking up an editorial score as a review rating would contradict everything else on this page.
How rankings are decided
Not by heat, because heat does not vary — every plug-in unit in this category is capped at 1,500 W and about 5,118 BTU per hour by a standard household circuit. Ranking on the one specification they all share would be theater.
So rankings turn on what genuinely differs: the opening or wall the unit fits, how the flame is produced and where it fails, the housing and glass, the depth if it is being recessed, whether the manufacturer publishes enough to plan from, and the computed running cost. Where two units are equivalent, we say so rather than manufacturing a difference to justify an order.
Commission, and what it does not buy
We earn a commission on some links. It has never changed a ranking, and the structural proof of that is on every roundup: at least one named skip-pick, and brand-direct links to units we earn nothing from, included because a reader comparing that size ought to know they exist.

If a figure here is wrong, we want to know and we will correct it publicly with the date. Email info@emberandinsert.com. That includes the arithmetic — everything on this site is computed from formulas we show, so an error is checkable rather than a matter of opinion.
