Symptom, likely cause, what to try. Nobody wants to be sold to mid-fault, so there is nothing for sale on this page — just the fixes and an honest line about where they stop.

Start here: the four things that explain most faults
Before diagnosing anything specific, check these. 1) The unit is on the low setting rather than high — many default to 750 W. 2) The heater is off and only the flame is running; they are independent controls. 3) The heat outlet is blocked, which trips the overheat cutout. 4) It is on an overloaded circuit, drawing about 12.5 amps against everything else on that run. Those four account for the large majority of what gets reported as a broken fireplace.
The heater does not come on, but the flame works

It beeps
Beeping on an electric fireplace is almost always deliberate signalling rather than a fault. Single beeps on button presses are confirmation tones. A repeating beep usually means one of three things: a thermostat set point has been reached, a timer has expired, or the unit has hit a protection cutout.
- Single beep on each press — normal confirmation. Many units let you mute it; check the manual.
- Repeating beep with the heater off — usually the overheat cutout. Unplug for 15 minutes, clear the vents, restore power.
- Beeping at the same interval regardless of settings — check whether a timer is active.
- Beeping that started after a power cut — some units beep until settings are re-entered. Power cycle and reconfigure.
It clicks
Clicking is usually normal and usually the thermostat. A relay opening and closing as the set point is reached makes an audible click, and on a quiet evening in a quiet room it is more noticeable than anyone expects. If the clicking coincides with the heater cycling on and off, that is the mechanism working correctly.
Clicking that is rhythmic, continuous and unrelated to heating is different — that points at the flame mechanism. Reflector-style units rotate a physical drum, and a warped reflector or a failing bearing produces a regular tick. That is a mechanical fault and it will not improve on its own.
It hums or buzzes

The flames have stopped moving
On a reflector-style unit the flame effect is produced by a motor turning a physical reflector. When the flame freezes but the light stays on, the motor has usually failed — the LEDs are still lit but nothing is moving them. It is the most common mechanical failure in the category and on many units the motor is a replaceable part.
- Confirm the flame is actually on and not just the ember bed.
- Check the flame speed setting has not been turned to its lowest step.
- Power the unit off at the wall for a few minutes and restart it.
- If the light is on but nothing moves, it is the motor. Contact the manufacturer with the model number and ask about a replacement flame motor before assuming the unit is finished.
The remote does not work
- New batteries first, and check the orientation. This is genuinely the answer most of the time.
- Line of sight. Infrared remotes need to see the receiver, which is often behind the glass at one end of the unit.
- Re-pair it. RF remotes on some units need pairing after a power cut — the manual will give the sequence.
- Test the panel controls. If the unit responds on the panel but not the remote, the fault is the remote. If neither works, it is the unit.
- Check the receiver is not blocked by trim, media or something resting against the glass.
It trips the breaker
This one is not a fault, usually — it is arithmetic. A 1,500 W fireplace draws about 12.5 amps, which is roughly 83% of a standard 15-amp circuit before anything else on that circuit is switched on. Add a television, a lamp and a games console and you are over.
- Test it deliberately: run the fireplace alone on high for fifteen minutes. If it holds, the fireplace is fine and the circuit is loaded.
- Use the 750 W low setting, which halves the draw to about 6.3 amps.
- Move other loads off that circuit, or move the fireplace to a different one.
- Never use an extension cord or power strip to reach a different outlet. Continuous 12.5 A through a cord not rated for it is a genuine fire risk, and manufacturers prohibit it.
- If it trips with nothing else running, stop using it and contact the manufacturer. That is a fault rather than a load problem.

It smells of burning
A faint smell on first use, or on the first use of the season, is usually dust burning off the element and passes within an hour or so. A smell that persists, smells of hot plastic, or is accompanied by any visible discoloration is not that.
The room is not getting warm
Check the four things at the top of this page first — setting, heater actually on, outlet clear, circuit not overloaded. If all four are fine, the unit is probably working correctly and the room is simply larger than 5,118 BTU per hour can hold.
That is a limit of the category rather than a fault: every plug-in electric fireplace is capped at 1,500 W by a standard household circuit, which covers roughly 256 square feet on the usual rule of thumb. Where troubleshooting stops
Everything on this page is a check you can make from outside the unit — settings, obstructions, batteries, what else is on the circuit. None of it requires opening anything.
- Do not open the cabinet to inspect wiring or elements. There is nothing user-serviceable in there on most units and doing so voids the warranty.
- Do not replace a mains cord or hardwire anything. That is licensed work.
- Do not bypass a cutout. Overheat protection tripping repeatedly is information, not an obstacle.
- Contact the manufacturer with your model number before assuming a unit is scrap. Flame motors and fans are commonly replaceable parts, and warranty terms in this category vary widely.
- Anything involving the plug, the outlet or the breaker itself goes to a licensed electrician. Where the answer depends on electrical code, we do not give it.

Why is my electric fireplace beeping?
Usually deliberate signalling rather than a fault: a confirmation tone, a thermostat set point reached, a timer expiring, or an overheat cutout. If it beeps continuously with the heater off, unplug it for 15 minutes, clear anything blocking the outlet, and restore power.
Why is my electric fireplace making a clicking noise?

Can I repair an electric fireplace myself?
You can do everything on this page — settings, obstructions, batteries, circuit checks — without opening anything. Beyond that, no: there is nothing user-serviceable inside most units, opening the cabinet voids the warranty, and anything involving the cord, plug, outlet or breaker is licensed electrical work.
