Are electric fireplaces safe?
Safer than any fuel-burning fireplace, on every measure people usually worry about. The real considerations are electrical, and they are worth taking seriously.

The short answer
Yes, and by a wide margin compared with any fuel-burning fireplace. There is no combustion, so no carbon monoxide, no smoke, no sparks, no creosote and no flue to maintain. The genuine considerations are all electrical: circuit load, cord routing, surface temperature and clearance.

The four things that do matter
1. Circuit load — the big one
A 1,500 W fireplace draws about 12.5 amps continuously, which is roughly 83% of a standard 15-amp circuit before anything else on that circuit is switched on. Many manufacturers specify a dedicated circuit for exactly this reason.
The practical rules: plug directly into a wall receptacle, never a power strip or an extension cord; know what else is on that circuit; and use the 750 W low setting when it is sufficient, which halves the load. The arithmetic is on watts, amps and your circuit.
2. Cord routing
Never run the cord under a rug, under furniture, or through a doorway. Continuous high-current draw through a compressed or abraded cord is the failure mode behind a meaningful share of heater-related fires, and it is entirely avoidable. If the cord will not reach tidily, the answer is a properly installed receptacle, not a longer cord.
3. Surface temperature
The front glass of a running unit gets warm. Not fireplace-hot, and not enough to burn an adult on brief contact — but warm enough to be worth thinking about with crawling children, and a console fireplace puts that glass at exactly toddler height. A hearth guard, or running the flame without the heater, both solve it.
4. Clearance and airflow
Keep the heat outlet genuinely clear. A blocked outlet triggers the overheat cutout, which is the safety system working — but repeatedly exercising a safety cutout is not a plan. Follow the manufacturer's stated clearance to a mantel or shelf above the unit; those figures are model-specific and they are in the manual for a reason.
Specific situations
- Bedrooms. Fine, and one of the main reasons people choose electric. No combustion means no CO detector requirement. Use a timer rather than running it all night.
- Children. The glass gets warm and a console puts it at toddler height. A guard or flame-only running solves it. The larger risk in the room is the television tipping — fit the anti-tip strap.
- Pets. No flame to singe anything. Cats will sit in front of a heat outlet indefinitely and are not harmed by it.
- On carpet. Safe for wall and insert units. For a freestanding stove, check the manual — some specify a hard surface or a minimum clearance underneath.
- In a bathroom. No. These are not rated for wet locations unless the manual explicitly says so, and almost none do.
- Unattended or overnight. Most units have overheat shutoff and timers and manufacturers generally permit it. Keep the vents clear and use the timer.

The low setting is a safety feature as much as an economy one: 750 W is 6.3 amps, less than half the circuit load, and for a room that is nearly comfortable it is frequently enough.

Are electric fireplaces safe?
Yes. There is no combustion, so no carbon monoxide, no smoke, no sparks and no flue to maintain. The real considerations are electrical: plug into a wall receptacle rather than a power strip, keep the cord out from under rugs and furniture, and keep the heat outlet clear.
Can an electric fireplace cause carbon monoxide?
No. Carbon monoxide is a product of combustion and nothing in an electric fireplace burns. This is why they can be fitted in bedrooms and basements without venting or a CO detector requirement.
Do electric fireplaces need venting or a chimney?
No. Nothing is exhausted, so there is nothing to vent. If you have an existing chimney it can stay capped and unused — and closing the damper is worth doing, because an open flue draws heated room air out all winter.
Are electric fireplaces safe for kids and pets?
Broadly yes — no flame, no exhaust, no sparks. The front glass gets warm, and on a console it sits at toddler height, so a guard or flame-only operation is sensible with very small children.
